Music at The Lounge: Melissa Ferrick

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

With a 30-year career, Melissa Ferrick has consistently defied labels, blending indie, alternative, folk, and punk in her genre-defying music. Known for her raw vulnerability and witty lyrics, Ferrick’s catalog invites listeners to confront their emotions. In 2023, Ferrick signed with Kill Rock Stars, joining artists like Sleater-Kinney and Elliott Smith. In celebration of her 25th anniversary, Ferrick re-recorded her iconic album Everything I Need, set for release on October 11, 2024. The re-recorded version features live takes with no overdubs, capturing the intensity and power of her live shows. Ferrick’s journey has also made her a trailblazer for queer artists, navigating a music industry rife with sexism and homophobia in the 90s. Beyond her music, she founded Drive Music Agency, a platform for emerging indie acts, and teaches courses at Northeastern University, focusing on music business, songwriting, and creative entrepreneurship. Melissa’s career began in her hometown of Ipswich, Massachusetts, where she played local venues before gaining recognition when she opened for Morrissey in 1991. After signing to Atlantic Records, Ferrick released her debut Massive Blur in 1993. Over the years, she’s released 18 albums, won awards, and performed with renowned artists like Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco, and Tegan and Sara. Melissa Ferrick continues to defy norms and create music that resonates across generations.
