You might remember us mentioning Footbridge Lobster in our roundup of southern Maine lobster shacks. Last year, we sampled their fare at the walk-up window. More recently when our friends John and Penny visited from California and asked for fresh lobster rolls, we ate in the sit-down restaurant. We chose Footbridge because they wanted to see Ogunquit. Since it was a gorgeous day, we capped the visit with a walk on the Marginal Way to Perkins Cove.
The sit-down restaurant has about a dozen rustic tables with benches. You order at the counter and the food and drink is delivered to your table. The place was full when we got there. However, it turned over quickly. We ordered at the counter and were seated before the meals arrived.
There’s No Fresher Lobster
Footbridge Lobster is run by lobsterman Chris Eager and his family. Chris sails each day out of Kittery and offers his catch at the restaurant. The only way it would be fresher is if he sailed out of Perkins Cove itself. On our visit, this proved true again. John, Penny and Leah each had a Maine-style roll. Maine rolls are served cold with mayo. Connecticut rolls are warm with butter. We think both are great. If you’ve got a strong opinion, let us know. They loved their rolls, which were heaped with fresh meat and served with chips and a pickle.
Fish Tacos for a Change
I opted for the fish tacos. They did not disappoint. The blackened haddock sat on a bed of fresh slaw and was topped with a relatively mild sauce and a sprig of cilantro. The fish was some of the best that I’ve ever had in a taco. Often, it seems that tacos are a place for chefs to dispose of their less-than-perfect fish, hiding it under a dowsing of over-spiced sauce. Not here. The fish was juicy and flavorful. And, the sauce complemented it without overpowering it. It may be sacrilege to say this about a lobster shack, but the fish tacos may be my new favorite dish at Footbridge.
