Cinema – I’m Still Here

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

Academy Award-winner: Best International Feature. In 1971, Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship. Eunice Paiva, a mother of five children is forced to reinvent herself after her family suffers a violent and arbitrary act by the government.

The film is based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s biographical book and tells the true story that helped reconstruct an important part of Brazil’s hidden history. Starring Fernanda Torres (winner, Golden Globe Award – Best Actress).

In the face of inhumanity, Salles’s film simply radiates love. -London Evening Standard

To tell this story through a woman who has been kind of raised by her husband to stay a little ignorant and watch her be forced to become a strong figure fighting against the regime… Fantastic performance. -FilmWeek

It’s one measure of Latin America’s arduous history that it has spawned so many books and movies about dictatorship… What they share is the awareness that history hurts. Few films have shown this with more delicate intelligence than I’m Still Here. -NPR

Torres, in her masterfully controlled performance, offers up all we could possibly require. -Independent

Through the meat of the movie, I’m Still Here is unassailable: a gripping story, sensitively performed, with outstanding production and costume design effectively reproducing the era. -Austin Chronicle

‘NR’ 137min, Portuguese w/ English subtitles
