Music at the Historic Theater – The Robert Cray Band

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

Robert Cray is a blues, soul, and rock icon whose career spans over five decades. Born in Georgia and raised in Washington, Cray was inspired by The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to pursue music. He first gained attention in the 1970s, building a local following in the Pacific Northwest and eventually forming a partnership with legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Cray’s breakthrough came in the 1980s with albums like Bad Influence and Strong Persuader, the latter of which brought him worldwide recognition, Grammy Awards, and the attention of major artists like Tina Turner and Eric Clapton.

Known for his stinging guitar and soulful voice, Cray has collaborated with blues legends such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker, while also performing alongside rock stars like The Rolling Stones. His music blends blues with soul, rock, and R&B, earning him both critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. Cray’s sound continues to evolve, with recent albums like In My Soul and That’s What I Heard showcasing his deeper, more expressive voice and guitar work.

With 19 studio albums, five Grammy Awards, and a place in the Blues Hall of Fame, Cray remains a defining figure in American roots music. His commitment to integrity and quality has made him one of the most respected musicians in the industry, continually pushing the boundaries of blues and soul.
