Let’s be honest, other than the free self parking, there is nothing inexpensive about the Cliff House, a high-end resort in Cape Neddick, just south of Ogunquit. The rooms are out of range for any frugal budget and the entrees at the restaurants are no where near cheap. Still, the resort boasts million-dollar views of the Maine coast from the Nubble to Perkins Cove. It is truly breathtaking.
Visit the Terrace
If you want to take in this gorgeous property, dress neatly (I wore khaki’s and a nice polo), park in the self parking lot and make your way to the Terrace restaurant (only open n the summer), which is just off the main lobby to the left when you are facing the ocean. With expansive ocean views, you can enjoy the luxury of the property without the cost of the more expensive onsite restaurant, the Tiller. Order the Chef’s Board for $29. A couple could make a light meal of the generous selection cheese, fruit and meats provided. If you are still hungry, add a caesar salad for $17. Enjoy a glass of wine, or save money with a soft drink. Water, of course, is free.
We realize these prices are not a super-bargain, but the context here is important. In season, rooms at the Cliff House can easily reach $1,000 per night. By visiting the Terrace you can enjoy the same ambiance for a few hours for less than $50 plus tip. If you can afford this splurge, you will enjoy some real bang for your buck.
