Art Exhibit: Rosalind Fedeli (a “Community Collects” Exhibit)

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

York Public Library’s annual “Community Collects” art show will exhibit the work of the late Rosalind Fedeli, a noted York artist and former owner of the River Current Art Gallery on York Street. She passed away in February 2024 at the age of eighty-four.

A longtime resident of York, “Roz” left an indelible mark on the greater York community as member of the Ogunquit and Kittery Art Associations. She exhibited in numerous galleries form Portsmouth to Bar Harbor and beyond.

Roz was a multimedia artist working in assemblage, painting, collage and sculpture. Her three-dimensional works are crafted of wood, metal, bone, feathers and fabricated objects. In her own words, “My work is dictated by the objects I’m able to find. I frequent yard sales, flea markets, beaches, curbside rubbish barrels, and am not opposed to dumpster diving.”

In later years, Roz turned her focus to painting, in keeping with her roots; she was raised by two landscape artists.

Roz’s River Current Art Gallery was located in the heart of York Village. Originally brought over from the Isle of Shoals, it became her gallery, studio, and home, and was surrounded by the charming gardens she created. She welcomed passersby daily and was delighted to converse and show her creations.

Rosalind had a fertile imagination and a powerful ability to combine unorthodox materials in unique designs that were whimsical, colorful, and often contained a subtle message.

The “Community Collects” exhibit is made possible thanks to private collectors in the area who generously loan pieces from their personal collections for the community to enjoy. The York Public Library Art Committee thanks Linda Briggs, Linda Payne-Sylvester, the Barn Gallery, Mary and Chris Bandereck, and others for collectively sharing dozens of Fedeli pieces that will soon adorn Library walls.

The Exhibit runs from January 2 through March 24 during open hours. An exhibit opening is scheduled for January 14 from 5-7 PM in the Upper Level at York Public Library.
