Savoir Faire with Wyn & The White Light

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

Savoir Faire:
With a voice straight out of the jazz age, Savoir Faire brings the modern existential crisis into a realm of retro-noir.

Studying jazz guitar in college, Savoir Faire soon discovered the duets of Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald, shaping her approach to both harmonic and melodic lines on guitar and voice. She spent years performing as a lounge singer and jazz guitarist before adding the last few ingredients that would form the aesthetic of Savoir Faire: the influence of dramatic 60s noir and 90s alternative rock. With lush and syrupy vocals, biting lyricism, and searing guitar parts that hint at her Persian heritage, Savoir Faire confronts wistful nostalgia with modern rage in her upcoming full-length album, Hopeless Nostalgic.

Hopeless Nostalgic explores themes of political and social unrest through heavy moods that borrow from both the jazz and female songwriters that informed her sound. Darkness hovers underneath every song in a Lynchian manner, as ugly truths of our modern society seep through the vintage facade of Savoir Faire’s crooner-like vocals and often Real Book-esque guitar harmonies. Songs like “Machine With A Dream” and “Sweet”, channeling female rage over reproductive rights and gender bias, eventually give way to heavy, crunchy guitars. The culminating title track finds the singer wrestling with the comforts of nostalgia, calling her back in the face of a society that has betrayed her, keenly aware that all is not what it seems in the past as well.

Hopeless Nostalgic will be available on all digital platforms on January 16, 2024.

Wyn & The White Light:
Wyn and the White Light is the pomegranate-infused haunted-soul-rock band led by two-time ‘Female Performer of the Year’ New England Music Award (NEMA) nominee Wyn Doran. Wyn is no stranger to the New England music scene, receiving numerous NEMA nominations for her solo music, opening for acts including Rhett Miller and Giant Rooks, and working closely with Ben Folds at songwriting retreats. With the addition of Lucia Jean (bass/vocals) and Heidi Tierney (drums/vocals), Wyn has expanded into a new electric chapter with the White Light. The trio’s live act has taken flight: weaving primal, haunting energy with “blackened, burning candor (Deli Magazine),” and selling out numerous Boston shows in their first year.
