On Saturday, May 4, 2024, the Seashore Trolley Museum opens for its 85th season. It’s a place that would make “Big Bang Theory ” character Sheldon Cooper feel like he’d died and gone to heaven: this outdoor museum, on the Kennebunkport/Arundel town line, is filled with trains of all kinds. This includes trolleys, of course, but also old subway cars, Ts from Boston and more.
Opening day admission deals at Trolley Museum
In 2024, there are two, count ’em, two admission deals you’ll want to know about for May 4, 2024. One, It is Maine Day at the museum. If you’re a Maine resident like I am, then you can get in for just $2.07. Young folks, ages 16 and under from any state, get in for free on May 4th only.
And, two, May the fourth (say it out loud) is also Star Wars Day. If you dress like your favorite Star Wars character, then you’ll get in for free, regardless of your age.
About the Seashore Trolley Museum
The Seashore Trolley Museum is the first and largest electric railway museum in the world. It helps visitors gain a new appreciation for the role public transportation has played throughout history. The collection includes vehicles from almost every major city in the United States that had streetcar systems, as well as from across the world — from the omnibus, to electric streetcars, buses, light rail vehicles, and rapid transit cars.
Some of the things you can do at the Seashore Trolley Museum include:
- Take a ride on a heritage railroad in a vintage trolley from the early 1900s.
- Explore three carhouses filled with beautiful, restored trolleys and several other precious transit artifacts around our outdoor campus.
- Visit the restoration shop where you can view many cars in the process of maintenance or comprehensive restoration.
It was in this latter location — the restoration shop — where I volunteered last winter to help the museum get ready for Christmas Prelude. We were decorating vintage trolley cars for people who wanted a holiday spirit visit to the museum.
It’s also how I got this picture of a gingerbread house village, complete with trolley cars.
