Just south of downtown Ogunquit you will find the Ogunquit Playhouse. The Playhouse began almost a century ago in a renovated garage near Ogunquit’s town center. The founders Walter and Maude Hartwig were industry vetrans with deep ties to New York’s theater community. Their vision evolved into one of the premier summer-stock theater companies in the world.
The current building was built in 1937. It is air conditioned and seats 750 people. There are assitive listening devices for the hearing impaired and each production has two ASL-interpreted and eight open captioned performances. The Playhouse typically runs a 25-week summer season from May through October as well as occasional winter productions that are housed at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH.
