Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is home to the only active Shaker Community in the world and is a National Historic Landmark. It encompasses 17 buildings and 1750 acres of land. The Shakers have been farming since 1783. On this site you can see Scottish highland cattle, sheep, bees, orchards, gardens and barns that are almost 200 years old. The Shaker Museum provides guided tours, volunteer opportunities, workshops, and special events. You may also do self guided tours.
Since 1799, the Sabbathday Lake Shakers have cultivated, packaged, and sold to varieties of sweet herbs and medicinal teas. Following that tradition, they currently offer a selection of gourmet culinary herbs, herbal blends, spices and herbal teas. Their herbs are grown in gardens that are more than 200 years old, dried in a facility built in 1845, and packaged in tin canisters just like those used by their forbears since the 1800s.
Tours of the Shaker Museum offered Memorial Day through Indigenous Peoples Day, Monday-Saturday. Workshops typically require preregistration. Register at https://www.maineshakers.com/workshops/ .For more information, phone 207-926-4597 or email info@maineshakers.com.
