Yarn Sellar in York Maine

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

Our daughter Jane was visiting recently on a rainy day and, as a fiber arts enthusiast, she was thrilled to spend some time at the Yarn Sellar store in York, Maine. If you’ve driven on Route 1, from Kittery to Ogunquit, you’ve definitely driven by this cute little shop. Here is a review of our visit, with help from Jane.

What to Expect at the Yarn Sellar

Before you even walk in the door of the Yarn Sellar, you know the shop is going to be a friendly place. In addition to a sign warning you of the shop dog — who had gone home early the day we visited — the staff welcomed us the moment we stepped inside. They explained that the store was organized by yarn weights — lighter weight yarn on the right as you go in the store, progressively getting heavier as you went to the left of the store. Since Jane likes to knit socks, she made a beeline for those lighter weights.

Throughout the store, there are examples of items you can make with the yarn nearby. This ranged from sweaters to cowls to blankets to baby toys to bath mats.

They even had a whole shelf of emotional support chickens, which Jane explains is a social media phenomenon. Turns out the Yarn Sellar recently held a class on making your own emotional support chickens. Don’t understand what a knit emotional support chicken is? Here are examples of them.

Jane ended up buying three skeins of yarn, each in a different color, to make more socks. They are a wool-nylon blend, which she says is the best for making socks that last and are machine washable. However, she told me, you still need to hang them up to dry.

Classes at the Yarn Sellar

On Tuesdays, Thursday and Sunday, the Yarn Sellar offers time for people to come together to knit, crochet or work on a fiber arts project. Currently the schedule is as such:

  • Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm, drop-in for $10 an hour
  • Thursday and Sunday in the mornings, private lessons for $30 an hour

In addition, from time to time, they’ll offer special classes to make things, such as those aforementioned emotional support chickens or maybe this knit “Believe” sign from “Ted Lasso.”
