Split My Soul

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

All we see. Is all we are. Is all within.
Split My Soul is a surrealistic dance work that explores the conflict and integration
between seven complex characters: The People’s Jester, Lady Martyre, Fizzy Head,
Mystery Man, Twisted Mistress, The Kid, and Your Inevitable Death. Steil believes the
theatrical embodiment of internal characters and archetypes can help heal relationships,
build empathy for the attributes and tendencies of ourselves and others, and shift
perspectives towards the people and stories of our lives. These characters will work with
and against one another, exposing their inner stories and perils, and navigating locally
crafted set pieces such as stairs, moving walls, and a plethora of ropes. Set to an original
score by renowned composer Michael Wall, Split My Soul provides a cathartic visual and
sonic experience to unpack mental health challenges and scenarios.

Choreographer Bio:
Kelsie Steil (Biddeford, ME) is a choreographer crafting original dance works to present
through Maine and New England. Her portfolio comprises both live performance and
dance film and has been described as cerebral, visceral, and heavily theatrical. Her
projects are strong in collaboration, working with artists across all mediums, including
photographers, filmmakers, and music composers. Much of her work is rooted in mental
health and typically starts from building a character profile based on her personal
experiences. She believes in sharing the darkness and lightness that derive from the most
truthful human experiences. Go to Kelsie’s website to learn more:

Composer Bio:
Michael Wall is a highly innovative and impactful figure in the world of music and
dance. With diverse influences ranging from Nils Frahm to Nina Simone, he has been
distributing music since 1999 and has an extensive library of 53 albums with over 500
tracks. Michael is an in-demand composer who writes approximately 200 new
commissions per year for internationally renowned dance companies and choreographers.
After 15 years of teaching and accompanying in higher education, he turned his attention
and resources to developing his company Sound for Movement. The company focuses on
accessible licensing, music distribution and remote collaborations with dance and film
makers. Michael is currently developing an industry-first: online educational resources
that teach composing for dance, accompanying dance classes, and teaching music for
dance to dance educators. These resources are available on his website at
www.soundformovement.com.
