Seaweed Farming: Diversifying Maine’s Coastal Economies

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

Briana Warner, president and CEO of Atlantic Sea Farms, will offer a presentation about the prospects and challenges for seaweed farming and seaweed market growth in the US.

The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 98 percent of oceans in the world and our coastal economies are dependent on a lobster monoculture that is increasingly volatile. Seaweed is one of the most climate-friendly foods on the planet, and seaweed farming is a climate-change adaptation strategy that is creating new markets for fishermen who are learning the trade. In four years, Maine lobstermen have become the leaders in seaweed farming in the US.

Briana Warner is the President and CEO of Atlantic Sea Farms, the leading commercial kelp aquaculture company in the United States supplying regenerative, high-quality kelp to grocery stores, restaurants, institutions, and CPG companies. Following a career working overseas as a diplomat for the U.S. Department of State, she saw an opportunity to help create a more resilient and thriving coast by partnering with fishermen and lobstermen seeking to diversify their income in the face of climate change by growing kelp in their off-season. In turn, we have built an entirely new market for domestic kelp. The ASF team and partner farmers now account for the majority of the farmed kelp grown in the United States, proving that by placing farmers, the planet, and people first, a company can drive a market and do well by doing good.
