PPL and Portland Ovations welcome families to embrace the power of Drag Storytime in nurturing creativity, acceptance, and celebration of diversity in our children’s lives. Through stories selected by our librarians, Drag Queen Ophelia helps foster a world where every child feels safe expressing themselves.
About this series:
Portland Ovations’ Drag Storytime Series partners with local Drag Queens, Chartreuse Money and Ophelia to present 45 minutes of stories and art for kids and their caregivers. These glamorous expert storytellers use the art of drag to read books and lead craft projects at local bookstores, libraries, and community centers around Portland.
The goal of this program is to foster literacy and self-esteem in a safe, creative, joyful space. Drag Storytime follows the principles of Drag Pedagogy—a methodology that places importance on play, imagination and transformation, bravery, and community to create a learning environment where children can more freely express themselves and imagine new possibilities. Programs like Drag Storytime help children develop empathy, learn about gender diversity, and express their own creativity. This fun, fabulous literary experience fosters learning and play, encouraging children and their caregivers to celebrate all kinds of difference in a creative and joyful space.
