If you haven’t gotten around to getting your solar eclipse glasses yet for the April 8, 2024 event, you might be in luck for a freebie. I just found out about a contest happening online this Friday, March 22, 2024. The winning prize? Free solar glasses.
How to win a free pair of solar eclipse glasses
TINCUP Whiskey is sponsoring a contest to give away 400+ free pairs of ISO-certified eclipse-safe eyewear. How do you enter the contest? Follow these steps.
- On Friday, 3/22 at 9am ET, sign up HERE.
- You must be 21 and over to enter.
- If you’re one of the first 408 — for the 4/08 date of the eclipse — to sign up, you’ll win a free pair of solar eclipse glasses.
- TINCUP says all glasses will be delivered before the big day.
Note: Southern Maine on the Cheap is not responsible for the outcome of this contest, the inherent risk you assume in looking at an eclipse or for the timely delivery of prizes. Also, refer to this list from the American Astronomical Society for manufacturers of solar eclipse-safe glasses. If the maker of your glasses does not appear on this list, do not use them for the eclipse.
If you miss out on the contest, you can use some of the tips on getting safe glasses. You’ll find them in my article on how and where to view the solar eclipse in Maine. Some might be free from your local library. Otherwise, you can buy glasses at places like Lowe’s in Sanford.
Solar eclipse-inspired cocktail
Speaking of solar eclipses and glasses, it shouldn’t shock you that a whiskey company has come up with a solar-eclipse inspired cocktail. They’re calling it the TINCUP Total Eclipse Sour and TINCUP shared the recipe with me.
- 2 oz TINCUP American Whiskey
- 3/4 oz Lemon Juice
- 3/4 oz Honey
- 3 oz Club Soda
- Edible Glitter (Optional, yet highly encouraged for that wow factor!)
FYI, if you search the Maine Spirits site for where to buy TINCUP, note that they spell it as two words: TIN CUP. At first I wasn’t sure this spirit was sold in Maine. Then I figured out the spelling difference and found two kinds of TINCUP that is available in Maine:
- TINCUP American Whiskey (listed in the cocktail recipe)
- TINCUP Mountain Straight Rye Whiskey
