Have you ever been to the Duluth Trading store in South Portland? If not, you may want to head there on April 12th and 13th. Like last year, the store is giving away free underwear. Really — this is not an April Fool’s joke. We went last year and each got new underwear. Pictures here are from last year’s event.

Free underwear at Duluth Trading Co.
So, how do you get free underwear? Be one of the first 300 people to be at the store when it opens at 10 a.m. on either Saturday, April 12 or Sunday, April 13. Last year, this free underwear event was one day only and barely anyone knew about it. This was the line outside the store at opening time. We were shocked that more people weren’t there.

With the event happening over two days, I would imagine more people will show up. We’re planning on going again.
How to get free underwear at Duluth Trading in South Portland
With an old pair of undies in hand, you’ll be able to trade them in for a brand-new pair of Duluth Trading underwear for free. While the rules for this giveaway don’t state that you have to bring in a clean pair, please do. However, they have a system in place for dealing with your old underwear.
While you’re waiting in line, employees will hand you an empty poop bag to put your old underwear in. Yes, a dog poop bag, which isn’t surprising since Duluth is one of the dog-welcoming stores in Southern Maine. You’re supposed to put your old underwear in the poop bag and then dispose of it in a trash can that, last year, was labeled “Expired Underwear.”

After we threw away our old underwear, we were able to choose a new pair on the rack. There were limited sizes, colors and styles. They had underwear labeled both for women and men. Buck Naked is a brand of underwear for men.

Once you chose your new pair of underwear, the employees put it in a shopping bag and we were on our way. Of course, we stopped and shopped some more in the store and bought a few things. I’m sure that is part of the reason that Duluth offers this giveaway — to get people in the door in hopes that they’ll stay and shop like we did.

Giveaway rules
Here’s how the program works:
- On Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, starting at 10 a.m. local time, customers can bring in any brand of old, worn-out underwear to their local Duluth Trading store.
- In exchange, the first 300 customers will receive a new pair of Duluth Trading Buck Naked underwear in the color and size of their choice. (In-store only while supplies last. Limit one per customer.)
- The old underwear collected throughout the program will be disposed of in provided “bio-bags” aka doggie poop bags.
Buck Naked Boxer Briefs
Buck Naked is the Duluth brand of men’s underwear. They are combo boxer briefs. There’s nothing in the rules that says you can’t hand over a woman’s pair of underwear to receive a free pair of these Buck Naked underwear. And, to be honest, that’s what happened last year.
I didn’t think they were offering women’s underwear because when I read the rules of the giveaway, it indicated men’s only. So I handed in a pair of Bill’s old, clean underwear expecting I would get a second pair for him. Nope, they had women’s underwear to choose from, too. So I got a free pair, too.
In fact, Bill brought extra clean, old underwear and handed it out to people in line who had heard about the giveaway but didn’t realize they needed to bring a pair of old underwear to trade in and get a new pair. People were super appreciative.
Considering that Duluth underwear normally retails for between $19 and $25, this is a really good deal. That pair of underwear I got is still in regular rotation. And it is really great and rivals the expensive underwear I’ve purchased at Nordstrom in the past. However, in writing this, I realize that the cost of that underwear is similar to the cost of Duluth undies. So you really do get what you pay for.
The Duluth Trading Co. store is at 55 Maine Mall Road, South Portland. It’s located close to the Maine Mall and the Portland Jetport.
