The Holy Donut Maine

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

As soon as we moved to Kennebunk, our neighbors told us that we had to try The Holy Donut.

It was top of mind for them because the doughnut shop was opening its fourth location in Southern Maine in nearby Arundel.

So, for years we watched the area near the corner of Route 1 (aka Portland Road) across from the intersection of Limerick Road and Bandaloop restaurant transform.

Finally, in early 2023 The Holy Donut in Arundel opened.

Now we don’t have to drive to Scarborough anymore.

What is The Holy Donut

The Holy Donut has made a name for itself by making doughnuts from riced potatoes.

Not familiar with potato donuts?

Well, have you ever had funnel cake at the Fryeburg Fair?

That’s what potato doughnuts taste like to me.

Also, they are much bigger than your standard doughnut.

Think more bagel sized.

In addition, because these are handmade, they’re not perfectly shaped or uniform looking.

However, that doesn’t affect the taste.

They’re delicious.

What kind of donuts are there

Flavors rotate daily.

However, you can expect to have at least 20 varieties to choose from each day.

Also, The Holy Donut offers different kinds of donuts.

This includes:

  • Gluten free
  • Vegan
  • Filled
  • Seasonal
  • Specialty

My favorite?

Their glazed donuts, especially chocolate glazed and vanilla glazed.

In addition, they make only a certain number of items each day.

When they sell out, they close.

Literally, the store closes for the day.

That’s why they recommend that if you’re in the mood for doughnuts, you should visit well before noon.

Usually by noon, there are slim pickings, if any left at all.

During Wild Blueberry Weekend, expect to find doughnuts made with wild Maine blueberries.

Store locations

So, where are the four locations in Southern Maine?

There are two in Portland.

One shop is at 177 Commercial St.

The other Portland location is 194 Park Avenue.

Then, there is one in Scarborough.

That address is 398 Route 1.

The Scarborough shop had a walk-in lobby for shopping as well as a drive through.

Finally, there is the newest shop in Arundel.

The address is 1197 Portland Road.

In Arundel, you can get your doughnuts via the drive through or walk-up window.

Holy Donut hours

Portland

  • The Commercial Street location opens at 7 a.m. daily.
  • Park Avenue opens at 6:30 a.m. daily

Scarborough

  • Both the lobby and drive through at Scarborough open at 6 a.m.

Arundel

  • Walk up and drive through windows open at 7 a.m.

Final thoughts on The Holy Donut

Don’t just take my word for it.

Food and Wine magazine named The Holy Donut as one of the best doughnuts in all of Maine.

The other best donut is from Cogdon’s in Wells.

I’ll be writing a separate article on Cogdon’s, another doughnut favorite of mine.

Last year on National Doughnut Day, June 2, The Holy Donut offered a free small cup of coffee (hot or cold) with any purchase.

I can’t wait to see (and taste) what they do for National Doughnut Day this year.
