Try Hockey for Free This Weekend

POSTED BY
Leah Ingram

Twice a year, USA Hockey offers a “Try Hockey for Free” day. This is an opportunity for children ages four to nine, who are interested in checking out ice hockey, to do so for free.

Ice rinks nationwide open their doors to would-be hockey players. And Maine has at least one rink in the Portland area offering free hockey lessons.

The dates are Saturday, November 4, 2023, and Saturday, February 24, 2024.

Where to try hockey for free

When you visit the Try Hockey for Free website, you can plug in your zip code to find a rink near you. Before writing this article, I did that.

There is one participating hockey rink in Maine. Here are the details:

FAQ about trying hockey for free

Here is a quick FAQ about this hockey event for kids, courtesy of the Try Hockey for Free website.

Do we need our own hockey equipment to participate?

Most host locations will have loaner equipment, however, you are welcome to bring your own if you have it. Contact your host site directly for more information on equipment availability.

Do I need a USA Hockey membership to Try Hockey?

No! During registration, you will fill out a waiver for the participant, this will ensure you are covered by USA Hockey for your try hockey event. You will receive more information about a USA Hockey membership after your try hockey event.

What if the participant has no hockey or skating experience?

That’s great! We love introducing new players to the sport of hockey. Your athlete will be on the ice with certified coaches and instructors who are there to help players of all abilities and show them how FUN hockey is for everyone.

What if the participant is outside of the 4 to 9 age range?

Check with your local Try Hockey for Free host site to see if they are able to accomidate participants outside of the 4 to 9 age range.
