When we would visit my grandparents in Kezar Falls each summer, we always planned a day trip visit to the Maine Mall in South Portland. At that time the Mall was the biggest and best place to go shopping for clothing, accessories and more.
While stores like Target and Walmart are now scattered throughout Southern Maine, there are still reasons you’ll want to add a trip to the Maine Mall to your itinerary. For example, it was where we were able to take our dogs Oscar and Sadie for pictures with Santa and then again in the spring for pictures with the Easter Bunny.
Discover the Maine Mall
If you are looking for a one-stop shopping destination in South Portland, Maine, the Maine Mall is the place to be. It is the largest shopping mall in the state and is open seven days a week. Here is what you need to know about visiting.
Anchor Department Stores
Like many mall locations across the United States, department stores at The Maine Mall have seen better days. For example, when we parked near Old Navy to take the dogs to see Santa, we were near the closed-down Sears store. According to the Portland Press Herald, Sears closed in 2020 after some 50 years anchoring the mall.
At this time, there are only two traditional department stores that act as anchors at the mall. They are:
- JCPenney
- Macy’s
However, there are also two other large stores that could be considered anchors or destinations in their own right. They are:
- Best Buy
- Jordan’s Furniture
What stores are in the Maine Mall?
Here’s another reason to visit the Maine Mall: you’ll find the singular location of certain retailers in the state. In other words, if you want to shop at a certain store, this mall is the only place to find them in Maine.
Also, the outlets at Kittery may have more stores overall than the Maine Mall. However, if you need to visit an Apple Store, it is the only one you’ll find in the 207. The next nearest Apple Store is at the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Here is a complete list of stores in the Maine Mall where this is the only location in Maine.
- Apple
- Build-a-Bear Workshop
- Finish Line
- Foot Locker
- H&M
- Hollister
- J. Jill
- Jared: The Galleria of Jewelry
- Journeys
- Lovesac
- Lush Cosmetics
- PacSun
- Pandora
- Pink/Victoria’s Secret
- Pottery Barn
- Soma
- Swarovski
- Vans
Curbside Pickup at the Maine Mall
A number of stores offer curbside pickup. So, you’ll make your purchase online and then when it’s ready, you’ll head to the mall. When you arrive, you park in a designated spot and a store employee will bring your purchase out to your car. I love curbside pickup. It’s one of my favorite ways to shop at Target.
Here are the Maine Mall retailers that offer curbside pickup:
- Apple
- Best Buy
- DXL
- J.Jill
- Lush
- Pottery Barn
- Ulta Beauty
Attractions for Families and Children
When I say that there are attractions for families and children at the Maine Mall, you may be surprised to learn exactly what I mean.
Ropes course at Jordan’s Furniture
For instance, I had no idea that Jordan’s Furniture has what amounts to a ropes course for kids. If you come in from the mall entrance, then you have to walk right through this area.
The first time we saw it, it was a rainy, weekend day. So, it was packed with families. The line to get on the ropes was about 45-minutes long.
It is considered to be the largest indoor ropes course in the state. Users have one hour to make their way through the ropes maze. Tickets cost $15. If your child is 48 inches or shorter, they pay $10.
Here are other indoor things to do in Maine on a rainy day.
Mall arcade and bowling alley
In addition, there is a full-size bowling alley and arcade in the mall. Think Chuck E Cheese but with black lights. It is called Round 1, and it’s on the second floor near the food court. We saw pinball machines, pool tables, air hockey, video games, bowling and more.
Build-a-Bear Workshop
Finally, there is Maine’s only Build-A-Bear Workshop where kids can create their own stuffed animals. When my daughters were little, they loved having and going to birthday parties at Build-a-Bear Workshop. As I mentioned earlier, this is the only Build-a-Bear Workshop location in the state of Maine.

Stores Outside the Maine Mall
The perimeter of the Maine Mall has a number of notable, freestanding stores and restaurants. So, if you can’t find what you want, I would suggest walking across the parking lot to see your other options.
For example, there is no bookseller at the mall. However, Books-a-Million is nearby. Exit from Macy’s for the shortest walk to get to Books-a-Million.
As far as restaurants go, you’ll find Tuscan Table next to Books-a-Million. Right now, Sunday through Thursday, Tuscan Table has an early happy hour, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the bar. You’ll find prices are 1/2 off.
Finally, some of the stores located across from the Maine Mall are considered to be part of the mall family. This includes Ulta Beauty and DXL, which are on an island near the entrance to the Round 1 entertainment center.
The address of the Maine Mall is 364 Maine Mall Rd., South Portland, ME 04106.
