While Labor Day weekend marks the traditional end of summer, there are still plenty of things to do in southern Maine. The weather remains warm during the day allowing for some great beach time. Southen Maine boasts several beaches that are accessible. Since many schools in the region are already back in session, it can be a bit less crowded than the peak summer weeks.

After Labor Day Weekend: Locals’ Summer
When we lived at the Jersey Shore for a few years, the weeks after Labor Day were called locals’ summer. That’s because the tourists had finally gone back home, back to school or back to work. And there was still plenty of great weather to enjoy if you lived along the coast. You could say the same for post Labor Day in Maine.
There are also dog-friendly beaches. There’s also great mini-golf and Plenty of shopping. You can try thrift shopping, visit LL Bean or the outlets in Kittery or Freeport. Art enthusiasts can vist local galleries, the Portland Art Museum, the Ogunquit Museum or one of the hundred of local museums, like the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk. We love two of the area museums that focus on transportation: The Seashore Trolley Museum and the Maine Classic Car Museum. If it rains, our list of favorite activities is here.

In addition to these activities there are also pub trivia nights, live music and outdoor fun. Here are some of the events happening in the region. We will add more as we find out about them. The one thing you can’t do on Labor Day? Shop at the Costco in Maine. That’s because Costco is always closed on Labor Day.
